Area Quiz, 18th February
On the 18th February we hosted the Area Quiz. Congratulations to Cotley PC who won the branch section and the Quantock School of Riding who won the Centre section, good luck to them both in the next round!
We entered two teams, comprising ; Eliza and Kitty Chapple, Lucy and Jemima Kite,Amelia and Lucy Mowat, Ellen Cowling and Ella Varney. They all did really well having done lots of revision including; the Pony club, Grooming, Rivers, Lakes and War Horses. One of the teams came 3rd out of eighteen. Well done girls ! A special thank you to Lara Chapple too, who helped to run the evening.
Kennels Visit - Monday17th February
There were 33 D&S members and 5 Dulverton West North Molton Pony Club members who attended the Kennels Visit. We started off at the kennels where Master David Greenwood and Donald Summersgill (Hunstman) told us about the stags and hinds and their habits, and the hounds and how they work and care for them. We had the chance to meet the hounds who seemed very pleased to see us! Fortified by a Quality Street from Donald (thank you, Donald!), we then moved down the road to the stables where Master Loveday talked us through the magnificent tack room, the equipment the huntsman and other hunt staff always carry with them, and the importance of looking after your tack and keeping it clean and oiled. Janet Ackner then did a tour of the stables and feed room, and we all met the horses and found out how they are looked after. Everyone seemed to have a favourite horse, and one boy described the stables as 'like a tardis, it looked really small from the outside but is really big inside.'
The picture shows Miss Loveday Miller (MSH) who is in the middle wearing the Russian hat talking about the huntsman's saddle, in the midst of all the ranks of bridles and saddles.

Mendip Farmers SJ, Stockland Lovell, 22nd February
Mendip Farmers Pony Club SJ was well organised, friendly and a lovely sunny day, the 22nd February, at Stockland Lovell. In the 2'-2'3" Class Kelsie was riding her new pony Tommy who went very well and they had just one pole down, and Kitty on Volvo and Lara on Seren both had clear rounds. There was a very high standard, and a couple of other pony club teams were not only all clears but very fast too. As a team D&S were placed 5th.

SHOW JUMPING
We sent two teams to the West Somerset Pony Club Team Show jumping event, held at Stockland Lovell on Sunday 14th April.
Our teams came second in both the 2'9 and 3' classes with Clover Godsal, 14, pictured, also winning the 3'class as an individual on her pony, Comet. She was one of only three double clear rounds. Other Devon and Somerset team members, Eliza Chapple, Ellen Cowling and Kelsie Bielby were all placed in their classes.
Clover, who lives in Withypool, has had another recent Pony Club success as she qualified for the National Pony Club triathlon championships to be held at Milton Keynes.
Clover Godsal and Comet |
Triathlon
The Cotley Triathlon was successful with Clover Godsall qualifying for the National championships held at Milton Keynes Junior Under 14s. she had a very good running time.
The Team of Eliza, Imogen, Olivia and Clover were 3rd overall.
The Mini girls Sophie Bray, Kitty Chapple and Daisy Waldock were placed third with Sophie Bray also placed 5th individually. The team of Maggie and Gemmima Rundell with two others from Dartmoor hunt came 4th overall, and the team of Lara Chapple, Ella Varney, and Honor Weatherlake were 5th overall. Congrats to them all.
The Christmas Party
This year the Christmas party was held at Huish Champflower Village Hall, 32 children of varying ages had lots of fun, with some ingenious team games organised by Jo Chapple and Sarah Rundell. Chocolate and toilet rolls were vital ingredients mixed with pony club ties and hula hoops, the D&S proved that the competitive spirit is strong even when the ponies are tucked up for the night!
There was a lovely spread laid on by all of the parents, Gareth Varney was guest dj and Ben Kite gave a brilliant commentary on each of the wonderful entries in the homemade decoration competition.
Thanks to all who helped and all who came and brought a great Christmas spirit with them.
Many thanks to Sharon Varney for all her hard work to put on this event.

Success for Edward Barlow
Edward Barlow of the Devon and Somerset Pony Club is been enjoying great success this summer with a horse called "Millie" which has been kindly lent to him by Maria Floyd. After 2 clear rounds in the Intermediate section of the Pony Club Area 15 competition at Stockland Lovell over a course of 1.0m minimum, he did a white knuckle jump off and won the class, qualifying for the Finals at Cholmondeley Castle, Cheshire on 16th August.
He has also recently qualifed for the Inter-Schools SJ Championships at Addington Manor, Buckingham in October riding for Blundell's School. He was 2nd in the 90cm out of 82 competitors, qualifying as an individual and also a member of the Blundell's Team which won the 90cm and 1.0m.
He has also been successful in the Area Tethathlon coming 4th at Bicton and Treborough which he won the Junior boys' running and shooting and was clear X-Country.

Area 15 Pony Club Quiz. TEAM WIN !!
Sixteen D&S members travelled to Thornfalcon, near Taunton, on 13th February, to take part in the annual area quiz. There were sixteen teams of four, all from different age bands. Our teams were:
Anna Weatherlake, Rachel Horne, Charlotte Scott and Daisy Topp.
Laura Scott, Georgia Weatherlake, Edward Topp and Honor Weatherlake.
Tom McCanlis, Toby Topp, Will Weatherlake and Henry Scott.
Zoe McCanlis, Michael Waldock, Eliza Chapple and Olivia Weatherlake
The competition took place in a separate room with teams sat at tables like a pub quiz. It was organised by Polden Hills Pony Club. We, and all the other parents, sat in the bar, just peering in occasionally to check that our red shirted darlings were behaving. At 'half time' they all poured out, asking for drinks and announcing that D&S were 1st and 2nd. At this point we fell about saying 'That's not what we were expecting ' and 'Who's driving to Warwickshire?' After three more rounds Seavington beat Anna's team into 3rd place by one point, leaving Zoe's team as winners and eight points in the lead.
The other teams were all close in points, only 12 between last and second so well done to you all for TAKING PART.
The team of Zoe, Rachel, Eliza and Olivia will go to Moreton Morell College in Warwickshire for the National Quiz Finals on Sunday 1st April. Michael cannot go on that day so he will be replaced by Rachel who is in the same age group.
The serious revision starts now. If you have any tips please let us know !
Mounted Games Camp at Pontispool 25th/26th February
I visited the camp at Pontispool in beautiful sunshine. It was very well organised by Becky Daykin, the DC of Tiverton Pony Club. There were 40 children, filling all three arenas, from as far as Hampshire, Wales and Cornwall, as well as five D&S members. Everyone seemed to be having fun and learning new skills so lets hope this becomes an annual event. The lunch was also excellent !

Triathlon
Results from the very well run Cotley triathlon held at Taunton this Sunday where the D&S teams and individuals did very well. To summarise:
- Under 9
’s our two teams came 6th & 7th
- Kitty Chapple had a good individual score and came 7th out 29
- 11 and under our two teams came 2nd and 6th out
- With some great individual scores:
o Anna Bray came 2nd overall (missed joint 1st by 6 points or 1 sec. in running) and 2nd in shooting
o Eliza Chapple had best swimming time and 7th over all
o Olivia Weatherlake came second in the running
o Sophie Bray came 8th overall (improved her running time by 1 minute on her personal best)
o Cary Godsal
’s team of boys came 6th
- 14 and under
o The team came 7th and can see through improved shooting will improve performance greatly.
o Clover Godsal came 8th out 29 individuals
So well done to everyone for all trying so hard and supporting other team members. Great team spirit.
It was also great to see the older ones, in particular Georgia Weatherlake, providing a role model for the younger ones as she helped them all warm up, in a fun and energetic way, and then cheered them all on to the finishing line; no doubt improving their running times. Plus many thanks to Jo Chapple for all the shooting training she has done for the children and parents (loading) and brought so many new people into triathlon.

Hockey
PCHockey at Queens School Taunton 18TH DECEMBER.
On a very cold Sunday before Christmas the D&S Teams left the Hills and headed for the bright lights of Taunton, for Pony Club Hockey!
Junior Team. Eliza Chapple, Kitty Chapple ,Imogen Fairweather, Olivia Weatherlake ,Honor Weatherlake, Daisy(1st time with a hockey stick) Waldock and Henry Scott. We started well with Henry taking up the challenge of the new sport of Hockey (previously having played Hurling in Ireland) Henry managed to score 2 goals in the first draw of the tournament, being backed up well by Eliza and Kitty things did not go so good in the following rounds. Henry became a marked man and the other teams saw to it that the ball did not come his way again The final result being D&S Juniors were third over all.
Senior Team: Lottie Lamacraft, Rachael Horne, Michael Waldock, Charlotte Scott, Imogen Greenway, William Weatherlake and Georgia Weatherlake. Apart from having to play against Man Mountains the best the D&S Senior Team managed was a draw, and all were hard fought games.

Mounted Games
Report from HOYS.The team was: Rory Capel, Matt Seabourne, Zoey Cape, Charley Venner and Roisin Zammick with Ellie McLaughlin as reserve. The children had a tricky start to their week as Polo, that Charley was riding went lame and reserve pony Goldie replaced him which caused many changes in race orders and so on. Despite this in the first competition for the Equimax cup the team finished 2nd just one point behind Oakley Hunt West. In the Prince Philip Cup Competition the team won a session and came an excellent 3rd overall. They also won the Butlins Cup for the best Stable management. They had a brilliant week meeting equestrian celebrities such as Louise Whittaker as well as being shown around the Sky broadcasting studio and watching themselves in 3D!

The Devon and Somerset Christmas Party Thurs 29th December.
Due to weather conditions the party had to be changed from the village hall in Wheddon Cross to Carhampton Village hall at the last minute as their was no electricity in Wheddon Cross.
Despite this after many phone calls everyone arrived at the new venue ok.
We started off with the Talent Competition and I think I can say on behalf of all the Parents that we do have lots of talented children in the D & S with children singing on their own or as a choir and children playing various instruments very well. The winners were a Choir singing a D & S Version of the 12 days of Christmas as it was very inventive. See Picture below.
The winners were chosen by the parents having cast two votes each for their favourite acts.
We then had an interval so the children could get a drink and something to eat and then we began with the party games. We started with pass the parcel and then onto musical statues and ended with my favourite game sleeping lions.
May I say a great thank you to all who made the effort to get to the new venue and im so glad that everyone enjoyed themselves and many thanks to all who helped clean up the hall after the party.
